Doing Everything Vacations vs. Relaxation Vacations

Every year for Christmas, my dad takes us on a vacation. He thinks it is easier than going out and picking out gifts for each of his four kids, plus one in-law. And quite frankly, I'm not even mad about it! It's always something I look forward to, whether we are going to the beach in California or touring Washington D.C. However, there is always one dilemma that we encounter when planning our Christmas vacation. Should we do a relaxing vacation or a tour everything/do everything/go all day long vacation?

What's the best type of vacation? I mean vacations are meant to be a nice, relaxing get-a-way from work and school and real life, right? Or are vacations meant to be for the journey, the exploring, the thrill of a new adventure? So what are we supposed to choose?!

Honestly, I don't know the right answer, and I don't think there is one! I think that it is preference. One thing that I have noticed is that the vacations that I plan are usually packed to the brim and by the end I am completely exhausted. I think that I could use a little bit more relaxation time when planning vacations. So this is my note to self: give yourself one relax day when planning this Christmas Vacation!

  1. Kayla, that is a really interesting thought because I have definitely felt that same stress with vacations. I tend to be a more relaxed vacationer enjoying the journey and trip. I always get so exhausted when I try to plan it out too hard and miss so much of the fun and rest. That is my personal preference. Its a good thought to consider though. Thanks!

  2. My family vacations seem to be quite similar! we plan all of these fun activities and outings, then after it's all over, I almost need a vacation from vacation! Maybe it would be better to alternate each year from a fun high intensity vacation, so a more relaxing go-at-your-own-pace one. Maybe by doing this, everyone will get a fill of what they want! And on the vacation, have one day where people can do what they want! Good luck!

  3. I think the best vacations are those that have some of each. I remember a few years ago my family went on vacation to the Redwoods. We had planned to be doings things every day and were going to be very busy, but the 2nd day we were there it started raining around noon and rained the rest of the day. We ended up heading back to the condo we had rented and just spending the rest of the day there. It was great to be able to take the time to relax, even though we didn't end up being able to do all we had wanted to do. This vacation is one that stands out to me as one of the best my family has been on.
